Sometimes even the smallest mistakes can be magnified. That is certainly true in playoff baseball, as Lower MontCo championship hopeful Roslyn found out earlier this evening at Upper Dublin High School. Roslyn, seeking its first league championship in decades, fell just shy of upsetting second-seeded Fort Washington in the league's title game.
Fort Washington, the defending league champions, started things off right in their first at-bat by scoring their first two runners. The leadoff hitter Jared Zarwin reached on a base hit, advanced to second when the ball bounced by Tom Kennedy in left, and scored on a PJ Acierno RBI single. Acierno quickly stole second, moved to third on a base hit by Max Vido, and scored when the Roslyn catcher made an errant throw on the ensuing steal attempt.

Roslyn answered back in the second when Kevin Moran reached on an error by the Golden Generals' third baseman. After a great catch by Video in center, Kennedy laced a base hit to put runners on first and second with one down. A walk to right fielder Donny Baehr loaded the bases for second baseman Jordan Garnick. Garnick hit a fly ball to right that appeared to be deep enough to score Moran. Moran took home after the catch, beating the throw by a step or two. After being alerted by their fans and bench that the runner may have left early, the defense successfully appealed and the runner was called out.
Things remained fairly even until Roslyn finally broke through in the top of the fifth. Baehr led off with a walk and stole second. He reached third on a groundout by Garnick and came home on a Kris Carr RBI sacrifice fly to left. Eric Tidwell got things going again with a walk. He advanced to second on a balk call and scored on an RBI basehit by Scott Schwartz.
Fort Washington got the go-ahead run in their sixth inning at-bat. Bob Andris battled for a one out walk before stealing second. Andris attempted to score on a base hit to right by Dan Brown but was thrown out at the plate by Baehr. On the throw, Brown advanced to second where he would score from after an RBI single by John Miller.
Jesse Kohler went the distance for the win on the mound for Fort Washington. He surrendered just two runs, three hits, and two walks while striking out seven. Christian Salem went all six innings for Roslyn. He pitched well, giving up three runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Fort Washington advances to the PA Region 3 Tournament which commences Saturday morning on the campus of Owen J. Roberts High School. The tournament is being hosted by the NorChester Bulldogs of the Chester County League.
